Excessive Card Fees A Thing Of The Past

Rediculous card fee's could be a thing of the past as the Government has finally stepped in to ban excessive debit & credit card fees airlines impose of passengers who choose to (and mostly have no choice but to) pay by card by the end of next year.

The move comes after complaints that airlines are imposing unavoidable stealth charges by adding excessive fees for using a card, often late in the booking process, making it hard to compare flights from different operators and get the best deals.

By the end of 2012 airlines and other companies must limit the fees charged to customers for paying by a debit or credit card to what it actually costs the company to process the payment. Which is usually only about 20p per debit card payment and 1.8% per credit payment.

Airlines such as Ryanair charge £6 'administration fee' per person per journey for those not paying using it's own stored value card, so if you choose to pay by Visa Debit for example thats an increase of around £5.80 which ultimately is profit for the airline.

The move has been hailed by consumer rights magazine Which?, who launched a 'super complaint on the issue earlier this year, as a huge victory for consumers. It says airline passengers alone pay more than £265,000 a day in debit and credit card fees.
